Anemia is evident when blood is deficient in hemoglobin and therefore less efficient in carrying oxygen. Optimal Hb concentration in the blood is relative to intrarenal oxygen delivery.
The kidney release erytropoietin to regulate both erythropoiesis and Hb syntesis. The term relative anemia is used when tissue oxygenation is inadequate despite a normal Hb level, e.g. acute blood loss or hypoxia due to high altitude.
