Thrombopoiesis is thought to be mediated by a hormone called thrombopoietin. Platelets are actually fragments of the mature megakaryocyte cytoplasm.
The megakaryoblast does not divide during mitosis and the cell simply increases its chromosome numbers (endomitosis). This result in a giant cell, the megakaryocyte, with abundant cytoplasm from which the platelets bud. Megakaryocytes in the bone marrow release platelets (thrombocytes) into the circulation.
