ABSTRACT
The Correlations between The Depression Incident with Four types of Personality Sanguineous, Choleric, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic on the Medical Students of University of Sriwijaya 2010

Depression is one of mental disturbances that often found and could attack anybody without gazing at the age, gender, race, ethnic, or the socioeconomics status. Depression began to appear during adolescence. Epidemiological studies indicate that the prevalence rate of depression for children is 2.5% and increased to 8.3% for adolescents. Students are quite vulnerable groups for experiencing depression, this condition primarily occurs in students who are at an early stage. Research conducted at Ziauddin Medical Faculty, Pakistan showed that the prevalence of depression at the early stage students was 66%. Depression is result of the interaction between the stressful events in life, biological sensitivity, and psychological endurance of someone. Personality as the psychological element known showed its contribution towards the occurance of the depression incident especially among new students.
This research was meant to analyze the correlation between the depression incident and four types of personality according to Hippocrates that is Sanguineous, Choleric, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic on the Medical Students of University of Sriwijaya 2010.
This cross sectional study was carried out in Medical Faculty of Inderalaya and Bukit on November 15 up until November 16 2010. Data was collected using three questionnaires that are sociodemography questionnaire, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and personality profile of Florence Littauer. Data were tested analytically and presented in table, graphic, and narration.
Based on the sociodemography characteristics, the average age of respondent was 18 years old, the number of female respondents is more, and the most religion of respondents was Islam. The prevalence of depression was 49,3% included all the level of depression and the most prevalence of personality type was melancholic (38%). Based on the statistic test nonparametric Spearman Rank showed negative correlation in low level between the depression incident and melancholic personality (p= 0,009 and rho= -0,108). Whereas the depression incident and the personality types sanguineous, choleric, and phlegmatic did not have relations, but there were probability to became depression.
In conclusion, the incidence of depression only had a significant relations with melancholic personality. It is expected that the high prevalence of depression among medical students of University Sriwijaya 2010 could motivate various sides to strive for various preventive efforts and intervention towards medical students, especially with a certain personality’s type. Moreover, this research also hoped could be developed and became the material for the further research.
