Several recent studies explained that the onset of puberty in young female has became earlier during the last 50 years. The age of young female menarche is an important indicator in the process of puberty. This is influenced by endogenous factor which is genetic and exogenous factors which are family economic status, nutritional status, race/regional origin, the number of families, and physical activity. The earlier age of young female menarche would increase the risk of pregnancy at younger age, the risk of breast cancer, and risk of young female unpreparedness in dealing with problems arising from menarche.
The aim of this study is to obtain information about the average age of young female menarche in elementary and lower secondary schools in Kemuning District Palembang, and determine the factors associated with their menarche age. The factors that studied in this study were family economic status, young female nutritional status, race/regional origin, the number of families, physical activity, the activity of watching television, parental education, and age of maternal menarche.

The data were analyzed by using Spearman's correlation test, Mann-Whitney, chi-square and linear regression to see the correlation of each independent variable and obtain the dominant factor that affecting the age of menarche.
From the data analysis, 116 (43.6%) young female have menarche and 150 (56.4%) who have not menarche with an average age of menarche is 11.68 ± 1.05 years and the youngest is 9 and the oldest is 14 years old.
