PROFILES OF HOSPITALIZED ACUTE APPENDICITIS PATIENTS IN THE SURGERY DEPARTMENT OF DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN GENERAL HOSPITAL PALEMBANG FROM JULY 1ST 2009 TO JUNE 30TH 2010

Acute appendicitis is a common emergency condition, even at dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital. While there is a presumption related to the high incidence of acute appendicitis at dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, the study about the profiles of hospitalized acute appendicitis patients in this hospital are none to be found. This study aims to illustrate the profiles of acute appendicitis patients in the surgery department of dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang from July 1st 2009 to June 30th 2010. This is an observational retrospective study. The data were collected from the medical records. From the medical records author managed to collect 56 samples of acute appendicitis patients. The result of this study shows that most of the patients are in their 10-20 years of age (35.7%). The number of male and female patients is equal. Pain on the lower right abdomen turned up to be the most frequent symptom (100%), and tenderness on the lower right abdomen emerged as the most frequent sign (100%). Leucocyte count mostly ranged between 10.000-18.000/mm for acute appendicitis patients (72.3%), and US frequently shows distention of appendix (87.5%). All of the patients underwent open appendectomy for definitive therapy. There are 6 patients (10.7%) suffered from wound infection as a complication of appendectomy, and length of stay for the patients mostly ranged between 3 to 7 days (94.6%).
